Alibhai wins on a wild weekend

Aqil Alibhai enjoyed another strong Northern Regions Junior Max karting outing on Saturday as he won a race before starting the second race in pole position before going out after a collision and then fighting back from 12th to fourth in the final for a close fourth overall on the day. 11-year old Ormonde lad Alibhai has enjoyed a strong regional season in the highly competitive class so far and remains a strong title contender among his under-15 high school rivals.

“We had a pretty good weekend besides that shunt,” Aqil admitted. “The first race was a brilliant battle with four of us leading but I got ahead when it counted, which is cool and I was on pole for race 2 and led the way for a while until Jayden Els got ahead, but he slowed and I was back up front until Daniele Patrizi got ahead as we diced with Kwanda Mokoena — I put my nose inside Kwanda as he looked right to see where Daniele was and we collided and that was it.

“I started twelfth in the final next to Kwanda and we had a great dice through the field — he pipped me for third at the end, but fourth brought me fourth for the day. “We can drop the middle race, so we are still very strong in the championship chase, so we are happy with the weekend. “Thanks to my dad and to my RKT Kosmic team for all the effort — now we prepare for the next round and the African Open at the end of June — that’s one race that is really worth winning and we are chasing that one for sure!”
