Brat Pack pandemonium at Killarney

The Burly Pro GTi Challenge Class C brat pack did not disappoint at Saturday’s second round Killarney Power Series. Far from that, the army of little Golf 1 GTis lived up to its reputation of being among the toughest classes in all of South African motorsport with another blistering racing display of the closest racing, chaos and the resultant attrition associated with all of that, but it was wily old fox Jacques Geldenhuys who emerged on top after a crunching day at the races. 

Geldenhuys laid down a warning shot by putting his G&A Motorsport GTi on pole position by just 0.005 seconds over Chris Swart, with champion and title chase leader Marco Busi (Automan) third from Dillon Joubert (Powder Coating World/TAC), Dario Busi (Automan), Bryan Morgan (Greatsoft), (Shane Williams (EBS Brake), Ian Kapp (Hydracor), Brett Roach and Ebrahim Levy (Armien Levy Racing), while Giordano Lupini (CIR/La Vie de Luc) failed to set a time after a hub failure.

Geldenhuys initially led the way in race 1 with Swart in close attendance, but he was passed by a fast-starting Roach, who was soon also past Geldenhuys and into the lead. Roach however suffered a hub failure, to release Geldenhyus up front, but he was now under pressure from Marco Busi while a couple of slow-starting Class B cars were also making their way back through the field to add to a thrilling finish as Geldenhuys held Busi off to take a maiden Class C win since his return to the class by all of a tenth of a second.

Chris Swart ended up third from Ebrahim Levy who made the best of a chaotic, slow Class A and B infested midfield battle to hold off a resurgent Giordano Lupini and Dillon Joubert in what proved a race of attrition that saw Bryan Morgan out of a strong second with another hub failure, Dario Busi and Ian Kapp stopping early and Shane Williams out with a puncture, but that had nothing on the action at the start of race 2…

All hell broke loose in Turn 1 as Marco Busi and Brett Roach tangled to spark an incident that eliminated five class front-runners including them, Lupini, Joubert and Williams. The race was stopped to clear the track before Geldenhuys, who had somehow survived the chaos after starting well back, came from behind to lead the class survivors home, albeit a tenth of a second clear of a resurgent Bryan Morgan with Levy third from Swart, Ian Kapp and Dario Busi.

Geldenhyus emerged the overall winner for the day over Swart and Levy, with Marco Busi ranked fourth as the best of the drivers to hit trouble from Lupini, Joubert, Morgan, Kapp, Dario Busi, Roach and Williams in a result that completely reshaped the top of the championship log. Marco Busi remains top of the provisional Class C championship tabkle, but now only two points clear of Jacques Geldenhuys and then a 9-point gap back to Bryan Morgan, with Giordano Lupini and Shane Williams tied in fourth on 10 points and Gert du Plessis (Cheaper Cars) next up ahead of Chris Swart, Ebrahim Levy, Jarred Simpson (Greatsoft) and Dillon Joubert in 10th.
