Thompson trio ready for new season

Lee Thompson Racing’s national championship race season starts at Kyalami’s Motorsport Festival with a three-car effort racing in both the Sasol GTC2 championship and the Engen Volkswagen Polo Cup Saturday 24 March.

“We start the national season at the home of South African Motor racing with a competitive three-car team,” Lee Thompson explained. “Charl Smalberger continues in Sasol GTC with his Sabertek Golf GTI and Simon need is back in Polo Cup Masters with the all-new Photonics Polo, while Delon Thompson, who raced with us in the regional VW Challenge last year steps up to Polo Cup Juniors in his A and L Materials Polo GTI — a well rounded trio that I am sure will be in the hunt on all fronts this year.”

Charl Smalberger continues in Sasol GTC2 with his privately-entered Sabertek LTR Golf GTI: “I am looking forward to another great season with Lee Thompson Racing and I can’t wait to get racing at Kyalami,” Charl confirmed. “We ran a good pre-season test program and I had time to get used to the slick tyres we will be using this year. “I was happy with the car — in fact the car seems to be handling quite well, so we are keen to improve on a pretty good season last year.”

Mauritius-based Photonics LTR Polo Cup Masters driver Simon Need continues in that series with his all-new Polo GTI this year: “I am extremely excited about the coming season,” Simon admitted. “We have a new faster car along with a new faster teammate in the form of Delon Thompson and we were pleased with our early pace at the Zwartkops official test where we both managed competitive times. “Kyalami, our season opener is a fantastic circuit and I am so looking forward to working with my team mate and my team Lee Thompson Racing to deliver a good result at round one.”

Former South African karting champion Delon Thompson meanwhile steps up to the Polo Cup aboard his A and L Materials Handling LTR Polo GTI: “I am super excited to race under Lee’s guidance this year,” Benoni driver Delon explained. “I aim to have a good season and to learn as much as I can from one of the best racing drivers in the country. “My confidence has grown in the new car every session I have driven and while the competition is fierce, I am keen to show what I can do while I grow as a driver in such a talented field. “I can’t wait to get behind the wheel at the iconic Kyalami next week.”

Lee Thompson Racing will compete in a full 24 March Motorsport Festival program featuring the cream of South Africa’s racing categories to offer a great day of racing at the home of South African motorsport - See you at Kyalami!
