Kart gremlins hamper Mostert’s season opener

Luan Mostert will want to forget Saturday’s Western Province kart season opener at Killarney —  the Bastion Primary Grade 2 kid from Brackenfell had high hopes of a strong start, but kart problems prevented him from delivering. Still, little Mostert was satisfied with third following a fightback that involved his entire team…

“Saturday was such a hard day,” Luan admitted. “But we fought hard and scored good points with third overall in the end so it was a good result after all. “It all went wrong in practice on Friday when our race engine broke. It's a pity because that was a super engine but my engineer Kito Perdigao did all he could and rebuilt the kart and engine, but we were way off the pace in qualifying.

Perdigao and the whole team rebuilt the kart again before the first race but it went from bad to worse for Luan in the first race when the kart kept on stopping — luckily Luan’s dad Andre was on track and managed to get the kart going every time, a disappointed Luan coughed home to score some most valuable points all be that well back.

Needless to say there was more frantic activity in Andre Mostert Vervoer/DSD/Donadio Plant pit as the team stripped and rebuilt Luan’s kart again between the races. The second race went better as Luan raced to third albeit he could not match the pace of leaders Eric Norman and Ian Joubert. Another bout of hard work between the races allowed Luan to dice in the front but he had to settle for third after being caught out while lapping the backmarkers in second place.

“We had a bad day, but it’s not going to be a bad year,” Luan grinned in conclusion. “We will be back and we have  three weeks to find our problems and fix them. “ I also have to say a very big thank you to my whole team — Kito, Marco, Ricky, dad, and oupa for all the effort this week end - I am so lucky to have such a great team behind me. “And congratulations to Eric on your win — you really deserved it!”
