Coetzee adds first open kart title

Durbanville driver Jason Coetzee closed off his 2018 karting season with a strong performance at Killarney’s WP finals on Saturday. Coetzee added his first open age group karting title to his impressive portfolio of national and regional titles with a workmanlike opening heat win before following ahead of wildcard teammate Umpie Swart home to second to clinch the WP Senior Max title, while also sharing the DD2 wins en route to second in the gearbox class for the day.

“We had a good day - it was good to take a DD2 win off of Umpie, but he beat me twice in Senior,” Jason admitted. “That’s cool though - I wrapped up my first open class WP title on Saturday and I am delighted with that — we had a tough run in Senior Max in the nationals, so it was good to clinch the regional championship. “Today was a bit of a challenge for all of us trying to learn the new surface, but the track is awesome — can't wait for it to be properly cured!

“That also ends off another great year’s karting with a title and there are so many people to thank — to my dad and mom and the SAKRA guys in Senior Max and to Umpire, Ed Murray and the whole EMR Extreme team in DD2, never mind all the officials, marshals and my rivals too. “It’s been a busy year and I learned so much racing against SA’s finest in the top classes — now for some exams before a well-earned break and then holidays — see you all next season!
