Coetzee scores in frantic Cape karts

Durbanville kart star Jason Coetzee enjoyed a frenetic third round of the Western Cape Karting Championships at Killarney on Saturday, picking up the pieces to take a pair of wins en route to overall DD2 honours as his principal rivals took each other out, while fighting hard to second behind an on-form Andrew Rackstraw in Senior Max. Coetzee went home from Killarney in strong contention in both title fights approaching the mid-season mark.

“DD2 was mad!” Jason explained. “Luke Herring got ahead in the first race and then basically blocked the road so nobody could pass, leaving the rest of us — Jono Thomas, Sebastian Boyd, my EMR Extreme CRG teammate Jurie Swart and me with the major double trouble of trying to find a way past the man in front while also trying to avoid each other! “It was tricky and there was lots of bumping that eventually saw Jurie and me getting past Luke, but Jurie’s nose cone was loose and he took a 5-second penalty so I took the win!

“Jurie drove away in the second race and I ended up behind Luke and despite my best efforts, I couldn’t pass him and then Luke and Jurie collided in the final and I found myself out front so all I had to do was keep ahead of Jono for the race win and overall victory for the day. “Depending how you look at the championship - if you include or exclude my three worst scores, I am either leading or second in both the championship, so that’s cool — a mad but very good day in DD2!

“Senior Max was looking good, but Andrew Rackstraw had really good race pace — we had two good dices in the first two races but he was in front when it counted and then Nick Verheul jumped me early in the final and by the time I had dealt with him, Andrew was gone. “Andrew did a better job than me today and well done to him - we need to spend a bit more time to get the best out of my SAKRA Kosmic and come back stronger, but the Senior championship is also very close, so it’s all to play for.

“We have another busy month ahead with the next national at Vereeniging at the end of the month and then more WP action early in May, so special thanks to my dad, Jurie and the team — we have had a positive start to the season - now we need to keep on improving as the year progresses.
