Aberdein eyes Budapest F3 progress

Cape Town driver Jonathan Aberdein heads to Budapest for Hungoraring’s second round of the 2018 FIA Formula 3 championship 2-3 June looking to step up following a successful, if challenging opening round at the Pau earlier in May. Aberdein was happy to have brought his Motopark Dallara-Volkswagen home in one piece and to also score points on his street circuit debut at the demanding French season opener, but he’s eagerly anticipating racing on a more conventional track in Hungary.

“My debut went well, all considered,” Jonathan admitted. “Racing on a street circuit for the first time was a new experience and to have scored my first Formula 3 points in that wet final race was a bonus. “Now I’m looking forward to going to Hungary to race on a track more like I am used to — we tested there earlier in the year, so I at least know which way the track goes and we can just get down to chasing a competitive set-up, rather than also navigating a steep learning curve again.

“The FIA European Formula 3 championship has to be one of the most competitive rungs in the single seater ladder to Formula 1 and it is filled with the best young racing talents out there as well as next generation racing names like Schumacher and Sato, who are the two drivers above me in the early championship race, so it would be good to leapfrog them both to come away from Budapest with a good few more points in the bag…”

The Hungoraring weekend starts with free practice Friday morning 1 June before first qualifying that afternoon. The first race happens late Saturday morning 2 June before race 2 qualifying later that afternoon and then races 2 and 3 respectively in the late morning and mid-afternoon Sunday 3 June.
