Van der Watt remains unbeaten in F1600

Birthday boy Julian van der Watt celebrated in style with another couple of wins in the 2017 Investchem South African Formula 1600 championships in East London on Saturday. Van der Watt remains unbeaten in the six rounds of the championship so far this season although Cape Town lad was beaten to pole position for the first time this season.

“That was a perfect birthday present for me,” Julian admitted. I qualified second, but I was by myself while my rivals were drafting each other, so we showed great pace by being able to put it on the front row without a slipstream and then getting pole position for the second race.

“I managed to pass pole man Brad Beningfield around the outside through Rifle Range - had to hold my breath for that! “Then pulled a small gap and kept it there until the end. “I led race 2 from flag to flag and managed to pull a 6 second gap to win - it was a another great weekend and the perfect birthday too.

“Of course I couldn’t have managed this result without the help of my Investchem racing team and all the hard work they put into the car as well as RDSA for all the guidance and support - thanks guys!”
