Karting upsets aplenty in Vereeniging

The fifth round of the Northern Regions Karting Championships produced several surprises on Saturday with maiden winners and some unexpected results amidst an action packed race day at Vereeniging’s Laserfiche Raceway.

Principal among those was Bryanston lad Oliver Gunner, who not only took his maiden Senior Max win in the opening race, but he went on to take the day overall aboard his d’Amico Attorneys Tony Kart with a second win in race 2 and a second place in the final ahead of race 2 winner Joshua Dias (CRG) and Daniel Duminy (SMD TonyKart). Wayland Wyman was fourth from Brandon Smith and the returning Shayur Harpal.

The high school Junior Max races saw newly crowned SA Mini Rok champion Kwanda Moekena (Squadra Corse FA Kart) not only taking his first ever win in that high school class, but he went on to take a dominant overall win with a trio of wins on the day. Behind him Cameron Dias (TonyKart) beat a delighted Tiffany Napier to the second step of the podium in a tight battle of the Junior Max lasses with the ever-improving Joseph Ellerine a happy fourth from pole man Jayden Els and Wayland Wyman.

Bradley Liebenberg took his customary triple DD2 victory for Birel, but second was a surprise as class debutant Daniel Duminy (SMD FA Kart) took the runner-up slot in a tiebreak after scoring equal points for the day with another karting lass, Ivana Cetinich (CRG). Brandon Smith was fourth from Masters winner Pascal Acquaah and Justin Allison, whose first heat retirement cost him a plausible podium for the day.

Jimmy Auby caused another upset by taking old school 125 GP honours, winning a couple of races en route to overall honours over Kurt Bakewell and race 3 winner Scott Falconer, with Paulo Dias fourth from Ian Basson and Miguel Dias, while seventh-placed Rob Bakewell took 125GP Veterans honours from Deon Auby and Mauro Munari. Wildcard Keagan Masters was another turn-up for the books as he took Superkart honours with double race wins over Brandon Auby and final race winner Bevan Williams.

There was plenty action in the primary school classes, where Jarrod Waberski had a great day at the races — the DAW Kosmic lad was dominant in the Mini Rok 60s, taking all three wins on offer to beat Leyton Fourie (Kosmic) and Nikolas Roos (RKT Kosmic) to the top of the podium. Ethan Coetzee was next up from Troy Snyman, Kwanda Mokoena and Elam Modiba.

Waberski made it a double when he also took overall under-13 Mini Max 125cc honours for the day, winning two races on his DAW Kosmic to one over Leyton Fourie (Kosmic). Aqil Alibhai (Kosmic) was third from Daniel de Paiva, Ethan Coetzee and Matthew Morrell.

Aqil Alibhai (Kosmic) dominated the under-12 Maxterino 60s with a trio of wins over Jordan Brooks and Troy Snyman. Joshua de Paiva was fourth from Muhammad Wally, Josh le Roux, Luviwe Sambudla and KC Ensor-Smith.

Mohammad Wally (TonyKart) was unstoppable in under-11 Micro Max, trotting off to three race wins on the trot as he left Joshua de Paiva, Mandla Mlangeni and Mohammed Moerat to scrap over the lesser podium placings, which were resolved in that order, with Jayden Goosen fifth from Moosa Kajee, Caleb Cotterell and Kyle Beukes.

Last but not least, the littlest guys in racing produced thrills in the under-8 Cadets, with Wian Boshoff taking the day overall, winning two races to one over Luke Hill. Anthon Lombard took the final podium step in third ahead of Rayn Asmal, Cyril Jacobs and Tshepang Shisinwana.

Gauteng’s karters return to action in two weeks at Zwartkops’ double-header with sixth round Northern Regions action Saturday followed by the African Open on Sunday. That is followed by a gap before the next Vereeniging regional happens Saturday 14 October.
