Thompson trio set for Zwartkops action

Lee Thompson Racing returns to home ground when the sixth round of the Extreme Festival visits Pretoria’s Zwartkops Raceway Saturday 18 August, with its drivers intent to wring every bit out of their hometown advantage. Charl Smallberger reckons its time to win again after a dry year in Sasol GTC2 so far, while young gun Delon Thompson intends to continue his march up the steps of the Engen Polo Cup podium and Simon Need is out for good points in the Polo Cup Masters race.

Charl Smalberger is keen to put his privateer Sabertek LTR Golf GTI straight on top of the Sasol GTC2 podium: “I had great pace and a really positive weekend in PE, although I could not put it together for a proper result in the end,” Charl explained. “There was a lot we could take away from that weekend after all and I’m positive, the car is ready after my PE off, we have the set-up for Zwartkops and we’ll be going for it — we need to win a race, you know?”

Polo Cup rookie Delon Thompson delivered another brilliant performance last time out to stand on the bottom step Engen Polo Cup Junior podium in Port Elizabeth and the plan is to take his LTR Polo a step or two up the rostrum this weekend: “After a long break I'm super keen to start testing ahead of Zwartkops,” Delon admitted. “I hope to bring yet another surprise result after PE — I’m feeling confident and I intend to keep that momentum going strong.”

Mauritian gentleman racer Simon Need and his Photonics LTR Polo have endured a torrid season so far in the cauldron that is the Engen VW Cup midfield and he intends to put an end to all that at Lee Thompson Racing’s home track. “I’ve had a few good races, but too much trouble in the others,” Simon owned up. “So the plan is to post two good points paying finishes in the Masters class this time out — bring it on — it's time to reward the lads for all their brilliant efforts.”

“We had a positive weekend last time out and we want to go even better at home at Zwartkops,” Lee Thompson concluded. “Both Charl and Delon are tight on it and all they need is a little luck for those first wins and we’ll all be holding thumbs and crossing fingers for a clean weekend for Simon, but we're all really looking forward to this one!”
