Charl, Delon & Simon keen to close off in style

Lee Thompson Racing is hoping for a home advantage as the final round Extreme Festival races go down at Zwartkops outside Pretoria Saturday 20 October. Charl Smalberger is keen to once again star in the Sasol GTC2 races, while Delon Thompson and Engen Polo Cup Masters class teammate Simon Need are keen to finish their seasons on the front foot.

Q20 Racing LTR Golf GTI driver Smalberger was the GTC form man at Killarney last time out and he’s keen to make his home races really count. “I’m looking to end off on a high,” Charl admitted. “We have not had the best season, but we have had some good moments and on our day we can beat anyone — we have proven that beyond doubt .

“I've had a great season with Lee - he must be one of the best guys to work with and it's been great fun too, the car has been great this year and we have scored seven or eight podiums - now it would be good to end up with a win that counts!"

In the Polo Cup, Lee Thompson Racing rookie Delon Thompson has starred  throughout the season and he’s keen to close off the season with his best results yet aboard his MF Autobody LTR Polo before starting sixth. “We have had a good season,” Delon admitted. “Last race was good even though the car had a little issue so hopefully it's all sorted — if we do that I am confident we can run in the front at Zwartkops."

“Qualifying was great, but the car was a bit stubborn today and I had to drive around an issue in race 1 so I was happy to rescue a few vital championship points there.” Delon explained. “Race 2 was better and I was able to hang with the lead bunch and enjoyed a tussle with Daniel Duminy on the way to sixth, so a good day overall — thanks to Lee and the guys for a great car as always!”

Mauritian Polo Masters gentleman racer Simon Need is looking forward to finishing the season well. “Racing in Cape Town was among the highlights of my year and I am keen to do even better at Lee Thompson Racing’s home track” Simon admitted. “The team is sure to hand me the perfect car and the plan is to reward them with plenty good Masters points this weekend.”

“We are coming to the end of a successful if tough and often challenging season for Charl, but good for Delon and Simon,” team principal Lee Thompson concluded. “We happen to be racing at home too, so let’s hope that is an advantage — go get it guys!”
