Cape V8 racers head for Jozi showdown

Cape Town’s V8 Masters series is on the road again with sixteen identical SA-built Mustang-like 347kW Ford V8-powered APV347is racers locked, loaded and on the great trek to Johannesburg to race in a unique and record-breaking V8-only race meeting as part of the annual Kyalami Festival of Motoring.

Racing alone on Saturday and together with the Gauteng-based Mobil 1 V8 Supercars on Sunday in that super V8 showcase, where a record 35 - the biggest grid of V8 supercars to ever race in South Africa is expected to take to the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit. The V8 Masters are ready for an extravaganza Festival weekend.

A most intriguing aspect for the V8 Masters is that while the series normally races in the Cape, Kyalami will be a home race to several of its drivers who otherwise travel to the Cape to race. The V8 Masters race with a little less power, rubber and aero than the Supercars, so they should lap a couple of seconds slower, making Sunday’s race even more entertaining with two lead battles going down on different pieces of track.

On track, V8 Masters Championship leader Fabio Tafani from Pretoria will have his work cut out by the Cape Town contingent after Marcel Angel’s black and yellow Autohaus Angel challenger put one over Tafani’s turquoise and orange machine, and the rest last time out.

Two more Jozi gents Rui Campos (Campos Transport), who was third last race, and Paolo Cavallieri will also fly that Gauteng flag against Cape fliers Richard Schreuder (TRS Construction), Mark Ridgeway, Rob Warrington, Brian Evans (Cape Eye Laser) and Sean Moore.

Also expect great Silver Class action between Harry Taylor, Charl van Stittert (Serr Synergy) and Tim Reddell and don’t rule out Mike Brooks, Fanie Theron, Andrew Strike, Alister Brown, Johann van der Venter, Rhoderick Simpson or Alistair Simpson among this lot.

When they race together on Sunday, expect the 20-strong V8 Supercar race action up front to go down between championship leader Mackie Adlem in his title duel with Terry Wilford, Thomas Reib and Franco di Matteo. The V8 races are a facet of the Festival of Motoring live motor show featuring everything from latest car model self-drives to Grand Prix Circuit supercar rides and a 4x4 zone, never mind all the latest new models on show and so much more.

Of course that V8 thunder will be the main petrol head attraction — more at festivalofmotoring.za.messefrankfurt.com.
