Close, but Boyd’s Junior Open bid foiled

Cape kart racer Sebastian Boyd enjoyed a winning weekend up in Pretoria, but the Camps Bay lad’s efforts were foiled by a surprise rival come Sunday afternoon. Boyd dominated Junior Max at the Zwartkops' Northern Regions raceday on Saturday in preparation for Sunday’s Rotax Max African Open, which wild winner-takes all Final, guaranteed the winning driver a place in the Rotax Max World Finals in Portugal come November.

“Saturday was good,” Boyd Boss freight Kosmic driver Sebastian explained. “I qualified third and won all three races, so we were really looking forward to Sunday and the chance to win that Junior Max World Final seat. “Sunday started well too — I was on Pole for the first African Open Pre Final and we won the race, but Joshua Coertze suddenly showed his hand and he beat me to the second Pre-Final win.

“That was unexpected — Josh has not raced that much this year and he never even raced on Saturday, but he found good pace as Sunday went on. “I got ahead at the start of the Final, but his kart really came good in the second half of the race and he managed to pass me and held on to win. “Good luck to Josh — he drove very well, but there’s still a chance that we can steal the SA Junior Max championship and go to Portugal through the front door, so it’s all to do at Zwartkops next month.”

Sebastian first has an appointment at Killarney for the seventh round Cape championship meeting Saturday 2 September, where he will be back to double duty in both Junior Max and the ultra-quick new DVS class. “The best practice to win, is to win and that’s exactly what I plan to do at Killarney. “Bring it on!”
