South African motorsport celebrates the life of another legend with the passing of Andrew Cave, one of the fathers of motor racing in Port Elizabeth at the age of 75 on Monday 17 April.

A mentor, a teacher, a legend and most of all a special friend to everyone who knew him, Andrew passed suddenly after falling ill on Monday. Andrew was photographing the sport he loved at Aldo Scribante, the racetrack he so adored over the past weekend and his sudden passing will leave an immense hole in Eastern Province and South African motorsport following over a half century in the sport.

An almost daily visitor to Aldo Scribante and always more than ready to give advice, guidance and lessons to racers across the board, Andrew Cave was larger than life. Known as Mr. BDA in deference to his intricate knowledge of that Cosworth engine following his years as head of the Ford Motorsport workshop under another PE racing giant, the late Bernie Marriner. Andrew kept regular contact with his drivers and crew the likes of Sarel van der Merwe, Tony Martin and many others.

More recently Andrew dedicated much of his time and effort in support of up and coming Port Elizabeth racing talents and was always be ready to discuss the heady days of racing based on his wealth of knowledge on the BDA, Escorts, Ford and anything Motorsport, with anyone interested in pit lane or wherever.

The Port Elizabeth and South African motorsport community extends its sincere condolences to wife Doreen, his friends and family.
