Masters champ Tasmin takes Killarney Cup
Killarney’s penultimate round Engen Polo Cup races went perfectly to script for Pepper Racing, when Tasmin Pepper took the overall win as she wrapped up the 2018 Polo Masters Championship and Campos brothers Jason and Keegan came home third and fourth overall.
Tasmin Pepper enjoyed a near perfect weekend in her Electric Life Pepper Racing Polo, qualifying fastest of all before storming to the top of the superpole session to take pole position. Tasmin then chased title rival Jeffrey Kruger for three laps before making her move to take the race lead before clearing off to the first heat win.
Tasmin could not get close enough to Kruger in race 2, but a close second was enough for the overall win for the day as she set the fastest lap for a bonus point to help wrap up the Masters Polo Cup with two races to go and head to the Zwartkops finale, just ten points behind Kruger in the overall championship race.
“Wow — what an awesome weekend from start to finish!” a delighted Tasmin wrapped it up. “ I managed to win the Masters championship with a round to go and while we never won the last race, I moved up the championship ladder and closed down the gap to Jeffrey up front so the fight is not yet over! “Huge thanks to my dad and Shane for all the effort, well done to my teammates you guys were on it all weekend — now we’re really looking forward to the last race of the season!”
Jason Campos qualified his Turn 1 Insurance Pepper Racing Polo sixth before moving up to third and then going on to deliver his best result of his rookie season so far with second behind teammate Tasmin Pepper in the first race, like his teammate passing championship leader Jeffrey Kruger to allow Tasmin to close a couple of extra points on her title rival and then repeating third in race 2 to stand on the podium in third for the day, as he jumped from tenth to fifth in the overall championship chase as he moved up to second among the Masters.
“I am delighted with my best result of the season so far,” Jason admitted. We got the car pretty well right and I was happy to make Superpole and then third on the grid was mega, but it got even better from there. “I was third for a while but I was able to get my hands on Jeffrey after Tasmin passed him and I made it stick, so second was brilliant and then I just kept my nose clean for third in race 2. “What a day — my best yet in Polo Cup — thanks so much to the guys for a great car this weekend!”
It was all fours for Keegan Campos and his Campos Transport Pepper Racing Polo, as he qualified fourth before taking fourth in Superpole en route to fourth in both races to consolidate fourth in the overall championship chase! “What can I say — I was stuck in fourth today!” Keegan quipped. It was a great day for the team — I won last time out, Tas won today and she’s Masters champion too — all in all a very good day at the races — thanks to the team as always for all the work.”
“All I can say is that I am so proud of all my drivers,” team principal Iain Pepper concluded. “The Masters championship and an overall win for Tas, Jason third for the day and up to second in the Masters championship and another strong performance for Keegan — now it’s all to do at Zwartkops 20 October — see you there!”
