Lindenberg dominates at Killarney

Peter Lindenberg enjoyed a perfect day at the races at Killarney’s Passion for Speed races on Saturday, putting himself in strong contention in the International Historic Saloon Series he is chasing this year.

Lindenberg put his Lindenberg Racing Shelby Mustang on pole position for the Pre-66 Legends race before powering to a dominant race 1 win over Jonathan du Toit (Chevy Nova), Dutch driver Michiel Campagne (Ford Galaxie), Mark du Toit (Ford Fairlane) and Trevor Tuck’s wieldy Alfa Giulia. Paige Lindenberg meanwhile enjoyed an entertaining dice with Dutch drivers Armand Adriaans (Chevy Biscayne) and Frans van Maarschalkerwaart’s Plymouth, ultimately following them home as she kept Chad Ten Doeschate’s Alfa and Rodney Green’s MGB in check.

Pete repeated the process to take race 2 over and the day over Jono du Toit, Campagne, Tuck, Adriaans and van Maarschalkerwaart to leave Killarney in a strong position en route to the third round of the international series at Zandvoort in Holland in May. Paige Lindenberg did not start the second race after a power steering pipe ruptured on the warm up lap.

The Lindenbergs also had trouble in the Classic Le Mans races when their Daytona Cobra stopped early after qualifying third, Leaving Swede Kennet Persson to race to victory in his Ford GT40 over Pretoria lad Mark du Toit and another Swede, Jan Kling in his GT40.

“That was a great weekend for me,” Peter Lindenberg admitted. “Pole position, fastest lap of the day and two race wins is the perfect result and it is always great when that happens. “It also means we head overseas in a strong position - especially considering it will be our Dutch rivals, who will be on home soil next time around. “Bring it on!”

“We were out of luck today,” Paige explained. “The first race was good and I had a ball around Killarney in the Fairlane, but we lost the power steering in race 2 and then the Cobra also had issues in the endurance race. “Such is racing but it was all made up by my dad’s great performance today - I am so proud of him!”

The Lindenbergs from Langebaan now look forward to the third and fourth rounds of the series in Holland and in England later in the year. Lindenberg Racing is backed by Sabat Batteries, Road to Race and Shelby SA; GES, aQuellé water, Metabo cordless power tools, The Solutions Team branding, Adendorff Machinery Mart and Hard Rock Cafe, as well as Llumar and Motul lubricants.

In other bruising Killarney action on Saturday, Charl Arangies’ Aston Martin beat local hero Marcel Angel and Craig Jarvis’ Ferraris to Extreme Supercars victory, but not before Arangies and Franco Scribante’s wild Porsche delivered a paint-swapping day-long battle for the lead.

Local ace Steve Humble took his Mallock to Pre-’74 Sports & Trans Am victory over Mark du Toit’s Daytona Cobra, Peter van der Spuy and Rui Campos' glorious Porsche RSRs and Dutch driver Bernt Andersson’s Lola and UK visitor Richard Smeeton (Foglieti FJ) beat local lad Pat Dunseith (Merlyn FF) and Des Hillary (FF Dulon) to historic single seater glory.

The Passion for Speed races also saw several local championships kicking off, as Franco Donadio opened (Ford Escort) the Cape classic car race season with victory over Eric van der Merwe’s Porsche, Richard Quixley’s Datsun and Robin Forbes in a Corvette. Fabio Tafani beat Mark Ridgway and Richard Schreuder to the V8 Mastercars win ahead of Supercars top 3; Ryan and Steve McCarthy and Martin Bensch and Nieyaaz Modack (Audi) took a dominant Clubmans win over Michael le Sueur and Clint Rennard’s VWs and Cody Alberts’ BMW.
