HRSA season comes to a head

Highveld race fans have something special to look forward to when the Historic Racing South Africa’s season comes to a head with the Universal Healthcare HRSA Pre-80 Saloon Car, HRSA Sports & GT and Charlies SuperSpar HRSA Pursuit Series championships set to be settled at Red Star Raceway near Delmas on Saturday 16 November.

The quickest Historic Racing class, the Pre-90 Sports & GT Cars will see Rey Cornelissen (Glashoff Maughan Consulting TVR Tuscan) facing off against a gang of Porsche 911 RSR including stalwart Rui Campos, Fred Konig (Northern Bolt & Tool), Stefan Snyders (Stenton Investments), and Stefan Puschavz (MI Equipment).

The Universal Healthcare Pre-80 Historic Racing SA saloons are always up for a good dice, with VW Scirocco duo Jannie van Rooyen and Stuart Konig (Nothern Bolt & Tool) primed to take on Marius Verwey (Mazda R100), Alan Green (Ford Escort) and the rest in Class D, while Rene van Rensburg (SV Tech Ford Escort) will campaign in Class E.

The title fight continues between unlikely Class F duo, Sean Hepburn (HiQ Midrand Datsun 1200 Deluxe) and Hubi von Moltke (Mercedes-Benz 280 CE). There’s always a great battle amongst the smallest Class G cars too, where Harm Beens Sr. (H3 Generator Ford Escort) takes up arms against Jan Jacobs (Olifantsfontein Training Centre Alfa Romeo GT Junior), Harry Lombard (A-B Brickworks/ PSA VW Beetle) and Marco Verwey (Datsun GX Coupe).

Some may call the Charlie’s Superspar Pursuit Series ‘back to front racing’, because in reality, it is. Run on handicap based on each car and driver’s pace on the day, the slowest cars start first and the fastest last and should the handicappers get it right, the whole field will cross the finish line at the same instant. So expect those last few laps to get quite hectic, as always!

Pursuit also offers a broad palette of machinery dicing on track with Fine Car entries expected from everything including exotics the likes of Bert van Aarle’s Lotus Elite, Brad Schafer (Porsche 944), Frans Venter (Nissan 280ZX) and Rob Clark (Containerforce Citroen CX2200), to humble classics the likes of Rob van Aarle’ s Ace Auto Ford Escort, Sean Hepburn (HiQ Midrand Datsun 1200 Deluxe) and Machiel Oberholzer (Aquaperm Mercedes-Benz 190E).

There’s just as much diversity on the Charlies Superspar Trophy class entry list, where T Harm Beens Jr. (H3 Generator Works Ford Escort), Mercedes duo Nadine von Moltke Todd and Andre Hattingh and Riaan Roux (Addfin Scirocco) compete against WG van Niekerk’s Marauder MK3 and Porsche trio, Clive Winterstein (Casheri Restorations 356A), Althea Pretorius (Carinvest 924) and Kobus Brits (The Wife’s 924).

All three HRSA classes will race two heats, while several drivers including Snyders, Puschavez, Brits and Fred and Stuart Konig, Cornelissen’s TVR and Hubi von Moltke’s Mercedes have also entered the day’s one-hour endurance race.

The HRSA classes run as part of a full Red Star race program Saturday 16 November. You will find Red Star Raceway on  Zonderfout Farm near Delmas, just off the Groenfontein-Dryden Turn Off Exit 485 on the N12 freeway towards Witbank.
