Volkswagen race day set to wow PE

Port Elizabeth is all set for a blockbuster racing weekend when the Aldo Scribante Race track hosts the Volkswagen Race Day Saturday 15 June. Not only will a packed program deliver a mid-winner’s day of magic South African national championship Extreme Festival racing, but local race fans will also be able to get behind Port Elizabeth’s top racers competing at home against the best the rest South Africa has to offer this weekend.

Topping the bill, Global Touring Cars has become the pride of Eastern Province motorsport, with two of the top three in the championship being Port Elizabeth drivers, while a greater proportion of the cars on the grid are run out of the province too. PE hero Simon Moss is the man to beat in his All Power Audi, run out of his dad Terry’s PE shop, while his closest rivals will travel the short distance from Uitenhage’s Volkswagen Motorsport to race this weekend is Jozi lad Keagan Masters and another PE top gun Daniel Rowe's Jettas. All of them will be chasing home glory this weekend.

Their competition will come from Gauteng charger Michael van Rooyen in a Toyota Corolla, Cape Town’s Johan Fourie (BMW) and another EP hero, Tschops Sipuka in the other Audi. Two more Uitenhage-based cars lead the GTC2 race too, with Bradley Liebenberg and Adrian Wood’s factory Volkswagen Golf GTIs set to take on Charl Smalberger’s similar car in that second division tussle.

Every one of the Falken Polo Cups racing on Saturday was built at Volkswagen Motorsport in Uitenhage, from where the series is also run, but those top drivers all hail elsewhere in SA. Jeffrey Kruger, Bradley Liebenberg, Shorter brothers Chris and Matt, Campos brothers Jason and Keegan and VW Development star Jonathan Mogotsi will all travel down from Jozi to entertain, but they are not alone — Cape kids Jurie Swart and Dario Busi and KZN kid Clinton Bezuidenhout can all be expected to vie for top Polo honours too.

The Investchem Formula 1600 wins & slicks single seaters will make for a purist treat at Aldo, where Scott Temple comes to town in charge of the title chase, with Nicholas Van Weely and young Andrew Rackstraw out to stop him. Two more young guns, Siyabonga Mankonkwana and Tiago Rebelo can be expected to be in the mix, while seasoned rivals Andrew Schofield and Alex Gillespie can never be discounted either.

Moving over to two wheels, Clinton Seller’s Yamaha is the bike to beat in national 1000cc Superbikes where you can expect veteran Lance Isaacs (BMW) and David McFadden on another Yamaha, Allan-Jon Venter, Garrick Vlok and Dylan Barnard on his back. Blaze Baker has dominated 600cc Supersport this season, but he has the similar Yamahas of Kewyn Snyman and Jared Schultz, Brandon Staffen and Dian Nelson to deal with, while local fans have Ricardo Otto to shout for.

But that's not all — the packed national raceday will be backed up by a couple of heats of the ever-impressive Eastern Province Modified Saloons, with Audi quartet, Aldo and Silvio Scribante facing off with upstart Bryn High and Nick Davidson, while Jozi wildcard George Economides will be making the trip with his Golf turbo. Other interest will be the ongoing overall title fight between Deon Slabbert and his Class B turbo Polo and Class D lad Daniel Bright (Golf), while Rufus Neetling’s BMW, AWD duo Gordon Nolan’s Subaru and Kevin Kelly's Mitsubishi should factor up front.

In all, Aldo Scribante’s Volkswagen raceday offers Port Elizabeth fans a brilliant spectacle as the SA’s top Extreme Festival championship fights come to town. Find Aldo Scribante off Kyalami Road, Coega — that’s just off the N2 on the R335 — tickets are on sale at the gate at R80 per person with under-12s free, there's a food court and ‘watering holes’, a kiddies area and loads more fun for the whole family.
