Coetzee gets season off to a flying start

With the exception of a first race win aboard his SAKRA Kosmic in the Rotax Senior Max race and a third in the first DD2 race aboard his EMR Extreme CRG, Jason Coetzee ended up in second in the remaining heats in both classes to also see him taking second overall in both classes as the Durbanville Grade 11 scholar opened his title accounts on the front step in the season-opening Western Province karting championship races at Killarney on Saturday.

“I’m quite happy with today’s results,” reigning double WP Junior Max champion Jason admitted. “We had a few challenges with tyres today so my pace was a little off, so to score well in both classes is a bonus. “I had a good dice with Andrew Rackstraw in Senior Max — I won race 1 and he beat me in the second and third races, but I must congratulate Rackstraw on his first Karting win on Saturday — well done!

“It was harder work in DD2 — I struggled to switch on my new tyres in qualifying and had to fight back from seventh, which included forcing my way past Mr. Roadblock, European Formula 3 driver Chris Aberdein and I had to settle for third behind my teammate Umpie Swart and Jono Thomas. Race 2 was easier - I was second from lights to flag behind Umpie, but Jono Thomas made me work for second in race 3.

Overall it was a positive day — we had to work for it, but we scored well and we had a great 1-2 in DD2 with Umpie and me for EMR Extreme DRG Racing — it was a great start to the season.
