Oliver shines despite challenging weekend

There is always an element of risk when racing on a Saturday to prepare for another race on the Sunday and those odds played out on an unfortunate Oliver Gunner. The Bryanston lad went to the track to continue in his championship chase in Saturday’s Northern Regions Senior Max races, while at the same time getting his eye in for Sunday’s wildcard African Open and the chance of a World Senior Max Final entry in Portugal in November.

“We arrived this weekend with good pace and I used that well to qualify second on Saturday and I went on to finish third in the first heat.”  Oliver explained. Unfortunately I became caught up with a kart in the middle of the track in the second race — I hit it straight on and bent our kart very badly and was out. “Despite the kart handling badly I managed to get from 14th to 8th in the last race, but we knew that Sunday was going to be a struggle.”

In spite of his challenges, Gunner qualified sixth for the African Senior Max Final and brought his D’Amico Attorneys Tony Kart home sixth in both the Pre Finals and the Final “I feel we were strong considering that I had a kart that was bent as much as it was,” Oliver concluded. “Now I’m keen to finish off the regional championship strong as we are in a good place there — I’m quite looking forward to that!”
