Snyman celebrates Sarno kart success

On the same weekend that Jody Scheckter celebrated 40 years since winning his 1979 Formula 1 World Championship at Monza, another South African racing prodigy from a small town was back to his winning ways elsewhere in Italy as young Troy Snyman sped to his second under-13 Mini Max karting victory in the Italian Rotax Max Challenge at Sarno, Napoli on Sunday.

SA Mini Max championship leader Snyman is using the Italian championship, not only to prepare for the South African Rotax Mini Max Finals at Zwartkops in Pretoria on 21 September, but he is also taking the opportunity to be best prepared for the possibility of racing in the World Finals at the same Italian kart track later in the year, and in anticipation of a full international 2020 campaign.

“We had another great weekend racing in Italy,” Pietermaritzburg lad Troy explained. “It was a special experience to race and win there and our plan is coming together nicely. “The level of competition is very high in Europe, so my coach Wesleigh Orr and I decided to come and race in the heart of karting in Italy to best prepare me for the SA Finals next weekend, while also keeping an eye on the chance of racing here in Naples in the Max World Finals in October.

“Our next mission is to wrap up the South African Mini Max title at Zwartkops because that will give me the ticket we need to compete in the Grand Finals. “That’s not going to be all that easy with rivals like Muhammed Wally and Matthew Morrell to beat, but I have won all three of the nationals in PE, Cape Town and at home at iDube so far this season and coming to Italy to sharpen my pencil should help, so I’d say I am ready to race in Pretoria."

Troy heads to Zwartkops in a formidable 50-point SA Mini Max championship lead, but with four heats still to race and drivers needing to drop three rounds, of which races some of his rivals did not race, all is not as clear-cut as it seems. However, with seven heat wins and two seconds in nine starts so far this season, Snyman comes back from Italy in a strong position.

“Special thanks to Wesleigh and everyone else who is contributing to my racing career — we are ready for the challenge ahead — roll on Zwartkops!”
