Aqil stars after study break

South African international primary school kart racer Aqil Alibhai returned to the track after taking a break to catch up on his schooling, to put in an impressive display at a wet Vereeniging Northern Regions finale on Saturday.

“The last time I sat in a kart was almost two months ago,” Aqil explained. “My school and my parents had me under pressure to really catch up as I missed a lot of classes while we raced overseas this year, so I only went out for practice for the first time on Friday afternoon and we had two sessions to get back up to speed and to figure out our brand new Praga chassis.

“Then it was raining cats and dogs Saturday morning, so I was quite delighted to put it fourth on the grid and go on to have a very good day - I ended up third overall and I enjoyed fighting hard up front to bring home two second places and a third - it was great to be back in the seat again and I had some cool dices with Jordan Brooks and Muhammad Wally.”

“Thanks so much to my parents and to everyone who has contributed to an incredible year of karting at home and overseas - now I need to pass my exams with best marks so I am ready for a new challenge next year.” Aqil will once again concentrate on racing in the UK in 2017.
