Young Lupini looking forward to a new challenge

Fifteen-year old Giordano Lupini and his black and yellow #16 Monroe Racing RSA Bakkie & Car magazine Golf 1 GTi are raring to go in the Bold Marine Western Province GTi Challenge reverse races at Killarney’s wrong-way-around Power Series races, Saturday 18 June.

The Franschhoek Grade 10 scholar — also the youngest of 18 leading young South African race drivers selected to the MSA Motorsport Development Academy in July, is looking forward to the challenge of racing his home track in the wrong direction for the first time. “I really enjoyed the reverse races we did in karting over the years and I think this will be more of the same,” Giordano explained.

“I am excited for the weekend — we have kept working on my racecraft and also fitted our Golf with a fresh set of Monroe shock absorbers among a few other things since the last race, so I hope to continue to improve and I want to deliver another good step forward on Saturday, even though it will in effect be on a completely different circuit.”

Young Lupini is also delighted to have been selected for the Motorsport Development Academy. “I am humbled to be one of the eighteen lucky young drivers to be selected from 59 applicants — especially considering that I am the youngest too,” Giordano admitted. “I’m not quite sure what to expect from the Academy, but I’m going to give it my all, learn as much as I possibly can and use all if it to progress in my race career. “Thank you MSA and all involved in the Academy for this great opportunity!”

Giordano will be racing alone from Killarney’s Pit 34 on Saturday, as Ebrahim Levy skips this round to take care of his 7-year old son Reza at the Cadet karting national at iDube. “Unfortunately there’s a date clash,” Ebrahim who leads the Class C championship in his Jive Armien Levy Golf rued. “But I will be back — they must enjoy the gap this weekend!”

The Bold Marine WP GTi Challenge will be one of the highlights of what promises to be a truly spectacular 18 June reverse direction Power Series bill — see you at Killarney!
