Morgan, du Toit, Thompson take GTi titles

While Bryan Morgan had long already wrapped up the 2016 WP Bold Marine GTi Challenge championship crown aboard his Greatsoft Golf 1 GTi, Nian du Toit (Cheaper Cars Jetta 3) and Eden Thompson (Golf 1 GTi) clinched the Class A and B titles at Saturday’s Killarney season finale.

Du Toit won the day in Class A, sharing heat wins with Jano van der Westhuizen (Wingfield Motors Polo) to wrap up the top class final. Van der Westhuizen had retired from the first race, leaving Umpie Swart (Alpine Autohaus Polo Classic) to take second, in what proved to be a weekend of attrition.

Pieter Kriel’s Golf engine exploded in race 1, rendering Turn 4 a skating rink as the rest of the field slid through on the oil, miraculously missing Kriel’s Golf stricken on the outside of the bend. That left du Toit to take the day from Swart and van der Westhuizen as Nian wrapped up the Class A title.

Eden Thompson bounced back to win the second race to clinch Class B, which went right down to the wire after title rivals Jacques Geldenhuys (Ferroli Golf 2 GTi) won race 1 from Scott Hayes (Jetta 2 CLi), after Thompson hit problems. But Eden hit back to take the second race win to clinch the class title.

A delighted Roelof Tolman (Cheaper Cars Golf 1 GTi) took overall Class B honours for the day from Thompson and a thrilled Earl Josephs (Silver Moon Golf 1 GTi). Hayes who was delayed in race 2, ended up third for the day from Norman Josephs (Silver Moon Polo) and Geldenhuys, after the other title protagonist, Shane du Toit was sidelined in Race 1.

Marco Busi was King of Class C on the day aboard his Automan Golf 1 GTi ending a splendid third overall from Greatsoft Golf 1 GTi teammates Jarred Simpson and champion Morgan. Marco took the first race at a canter from Simpson before fighting hard with Morgan, who ended up second in race 2, which saw Busi taking the overall win from Simpson, Morgan, Christopher Swart (Spongebob Golf 1 GTi), Flavio Busi (Automan Polo) and Dillon Jearey (GT Graphics Golf 1 GTi).

GTi Challenge will return to Killarney fresh for a brand new season in February.
