22h30 - cars - De Villiers and Terranova dice to the stage finish - the Mini 30 seconds ahead of the Toyota - they're 2 minutes apart in their fight for fourth - its a race to the finish!

22h10 - cars - Peterhansel overcomes Loeb to match his teammate on the WRC stage to all but seal victory on Dakar 2017's peunultimste stage. All that remains is a 64km run to the finish tomorrow.

21h00 - cars - The race is ontense at WP4 as Peterhansel closes a minute back on Loeb to consolidate his overall lead. Meanwhile Terranova and de Villiers fight over fifth, the Argentine a few seconds ahead on the road as Giniel defends his overall advantage. A little further back Rautenbach appears to have edged Al Qassimi in the rookie war...

20h40 - bikes - another stage win for Honda as Goncalves leads Barreda home in a 1-2  with van Beveren third for Yamaha. Race leader Sunderland is home - all the Brit needs do is cruise tomorrow's 64km home to Buenos Aires to score KTM's 20th Dakar bike win on the trot!

16h40 - cars - Before setting off this morning, Sebastien Loeb said he woulf not be able to catch teammate Peterhansel in the lead. “I expect that, even if it's some roads – and tomorrow's also off-road in the beginning – it will be a lot of time  - I think, without trouble, it will not be possible – but we still can try.” Loeb was also frustrated about getting lost on Thursday to lose the lead to his teammate. “We were lost three or four times in the wrong valley, doing two kilometres in a very rough section, and finally it wasn't the good way. "Not really fun - itt's too difficult to find a waypoint, it's sometimes nearly impossible.”

15h20 - cars - the race is on for the lead as Loeb piles on the pressure, almost exactly halving his deficit to Peterhansel by 2 minutes 56 out of Peterhansel's overall lead in today's short opening stint. Terranova, Despres and de Villiers are next up, 7 minutes off the pace with just 24 seconds covering the three as de Villiers and terranova fight over fourth, with Despres clearly cruising, satisfied with his third overall. The cars now head off on an open section before commencing the second half on WRC-style stages that should suit not only Loeb, but also the AWD Toyotas and Minis - this thing is going down to the wire...

15h00 - cars - the first of the cars are through WP1 with Sebastien Loeb on a charge and already 1:42 clear of Peterhansel. Giniel de Villiers is their, opening a minute up on his overall challenger Terranova in fourth, then came Despres, Al Rajhi, Rautenbach and Roma...

13h30 - bikes - Honda men, day leader Goncalves and fourth man Barreda must be on tenterhooks following the reitrement of teammates Brabec last night and Metge this morning with engine failures. Meanwhile Cervantes, who crashed this morning has also pulled out, unable to mend his wheel bent in the shunt

13h10 - bikes - the first motorcycles have finished the short dune section of today's stage and embarked on the open ride tot he restart - not surprisingly, it's the men in the lower half on the top ten pressing hard as Paulo Goncalves led the way from van Beveren, Renet and Barreda, with leader Sunderland next up from third place man Farres Guell, while second-placed man Walkner sits 11th following his earlier delay.

12h30 - bikes-  the bikes are on track and there's already action on stage - fifteenth-placed Ivan Cervantes has crashed and id struggling to repair his KTM, Michel Metge, who won yesterday only to be penalised for missinga waypoint, had things go from bad to worse when his Honda stopped en route and second placed Matthias Walkner lost six minutes early on...

DAKAR FRIDAY LIVE HERE
Nobody can call Dakar 2016 boring. Controversial perhaps, but not so boring and with organisers promising that, ’naturally, there are likely to be surprises in store,’ we should rest assured that this slippery snake of a race may well have a sting in the tail today as competitors take to the dunes of San Juan before attacking the WRC type tracks of Córdoba.

So, rest assured, you will have a little extra to keep yourself entertained this second Friday of the year — all you need to do is come back here regularly through the afternoon to keep abreast with the action as it happens. But hang on a second - today is Friday 13, so how will that affect today’s goings on - these racer types are pretty suspicious after all…

Overall the cars are still not sorted - the organisers handing Stephane Peterhansel 14 minutes back for his stopping to assist a rider he hit head-on in a river handle him the stage win and overall lead - but cars hitting bikes, trucks colliding with cars and the general mayhem yesterday must be playing on everyone’s minds, especially considering today’s symbolic date…

There are a few key fights to watch for - least of all the overall car duel between the Peugeots - can Loeb overcome Peterhansel, can Despres shock them both. Then there’s a proper figth for the best of the rest - Giniel de Viliers has overcome the worst of luck to sit fifth for Toyota and if yesterday’s slide continues as it did, he can catch and pass his fourth-placed Teammate Roma.

But Orlando Terranova sits just two and a half minutes behind de Villiers, so that is another fight to sit and watch pan out, while the rookie wrought is even more interesting with Sheikh Al Qassimi just a minute ahead of Toyota’s Zim/SA pair Rautenbach and Howie, who will fight it out over tenth overall too…

Its mor clearcut int he bikes, with Sunderland, Walkner and Farres Guell in a KTM stranglehold in the top 3 as the orange bikes race on toward an historic 20th Dakar win in a row on the Dakar, but that clean sweep is by no means assured with a battle for third between Guell and Adrien van Beveren’s Yamaha and never discound Barrada fighting back in fifth.

So don’t miss the action - the bikes start just before midday, with that saunter though the dunes before a controlled section and then that fast blast down to Cordoba late in the afternoon. See you later!
