Junior win and a tumultuous Senior debut

Champion Jason Coetzee (RKT Kosmic) continued where he had left off in the 2017 season opening Western Cape Junior Max races at Killarney on Saturday, but the Durbanville lad was subjected to a baptism of fire in the Senior Max class.

“Junior was brilliant,” Coetzee commented. “Pole position, three race wins and two fastest laps – I could not ask for a better start to my season. “But my Senior Max debut was a bit more difficult!

“I was very happy to qualify second in Seniors, but the weekend got a bit difficult when I became quite intimate with Umpie Swart – there was a bit of bumping and I dropped back to finish fifth.  Race 2 was good until Umpie and I clashed again and I retired, so I was having a hard day.

“But the last race went very well – Umpie got away in front and I chased hard, setting the fastest lap on my way to second, so it was a bit of mixed emotions on the day and I suppose I was happy with third overall and a win and a podium in two classes on the day.”

Jason returns to Killarney for the second WP karting regional on 11 March.
