Luca off to Italy to pursue karting career

South African karter Luca Munaretto starred in his last race in South Africa for a while as he prepares to head to live in Brescia in Northern Italy.

Driving a loaned chassis and engine, young Luca drove to a trio of second positions amongst a star-studded grid of highly experienced karters to bring his old Zanardi home second behind multiple SA champion Nathan Parkins, as he held the likes of Connor Rogers, Kyle Lawrence and Sebastian Lanzetti at bay in Saturday's Superkart races at Vereeniging's Laserfische Raceway.

“We had a late call from Etienne Roos at RKT to come race — he loaned us an older chassis and told me to get on with it,” Munaretto explained. “So I was very happy with the result, especially considering it’s probably my last race in SA for a while - I will be going to school and racing in Italy for the rest of the year, so that’s pretty exciting!”

A regular frontrunner in SA karting, Munaretto starred at last year’s DD2 Rotax Max World Final until he was taken out of a semifinal. “I will race the Italian KZ2 championship over there with the CRG Holland Team - it’s a brilliant opportunity and I just cannot wait.”
