Mostert delighted with progress

Little Luan Mostert was delighted to score his first karting podium on the weekend when the six-year old drove his AMV Racing machine to third place in Saturday’s Western Province Championship kart races at Killarney.

The Bastion Primary Grade 1 scholar showed great mettle as he overcame a few challenges through the day after his race engine died in morning warm-up and would not start again, so qualifying did not go as well as expected as he struggled with speed, but Luan still qualified fourth.

Grandfather Franco arrived and made an alteration or two and Luan just went out and tried his best. “I spun out and Eric Norman passed me,” Luan explained. “But I never gave up and I fought my way back to fourth. “The second race was scary — my friend Reese Koorzen’s engine exploded in the pit and hurt his arm, so I had to forget about that and I was very happy to finish third.”

His race 2 pace saw Luan qualify second for the final heat before racing to another fine third place. “I am so happy I can put that third place trophy on the shelf and I know that we need to work on my starts and the 180s for the next race, but I also need to thank a lot of people.

“Thanks Nono Franco, uncle Boetie and uncle Craig and of course Mom and dad for the support next to the track every race meeting and to Luke and uncle Les Herring, uncle Kito and Lucky for all the time they spend on me and my kart and to my karting friends Kai van Zyl and Paul Malcom for all their support.”
