Race win just reward for hard weekend

South African Junior Max champion Cameron O’Connor endured a tough weekend at the kart track to bounce back and win the Junior Max final of the opening SA National Championships at Vereeniging’s Laserfische Raceway on Monday.
“We ran in both DD2 and Senior Max this weekend,” Cameron explained. “It was a difficult one, but I am happy to have won the final Senior race to come home just one point off the championship lead.

We were very quick with both karts throughout the weekend, but then we got the set-up all wrong for both qualifying sessions and I ended up 7th on the Senior grid and tenth in DD2. “Both Classes are really competitive as you can imagine and I had to fight back to third in the first Senior race, but my pace was good enough to put it on pole position for the second heat.

“That was also a really good race, but I just could not catch Dino Stermin and then I won the third race from Josh Dias. “DD2 was a lot tougher – I had a good run until the kart started to misfire and stopped in the first race and then it did the same on the first lap in heat 2. “Race three was good though – I had really good pace and climbed from 23rd to finish 11th

“I would like to thank my folks as well as RKT, Etienne Roos and my loyal mechanic Cloepas Mbawa. “it’s a big change of pace now as we head to Cape Town for the first new Investchem Formula Ford 1600 race at Killarney this Saturday 25 March,”
Cameron Concluded. “We have done a lot of work towards that race - I am very excited for my first big track national – I can’t wait!”
