A tough national for Gunner

National kart racing is a very tough arena and if Monday’s Vereeniging series opener was anything to go by, at least half the field must be smarting over a difficult day at the track.

Bryanston lad Oliver Gunner is likely one of those following a difficult weekend where he showed so much promise but was prevented from delivering any of it. Gunner qualified a strong fifth in the super-competitive Senior Max on his brand new Tony Kart, but the first race had not even started when he found himself in the tyre wall and eliminated.

“We qualified nicely in fifth – the top 5 was split by just 0.3 seconds and it was looking good,” Oliver explained. “But they took forever to start the race and I was hit hard from behind on another warm-up lap between the false starts and I found myself in the tyres. “I tried to re-start but the kart was twisted, so I scored zero points for not starting race 1.

“That also meant I started at the back for Race 2, but I had a good run and fought back to finish sixth in race 2 and then 8th in Race 3. “It’s a pity about the first heat, but we can drop that race at the end of the year and the two races I did finish were quite good results, so all considered it was a better weekend than the overall results suggest.

“We managed to fight back a couple of positions and my pace was good – I’m now focussing on the next race and I’m looking forward to being ready for it.”
