Splendid action throughout the day

Killarney’s third round Western Province Championship karting action proved spectacular Saturday as albeit thin grids produced consistently spectacular action throughout the day.

Umpie Swart (EMR CRG) emerged the winningest driver of the day with one of the few dominant performances in DD2, where he was unbeaten, reeling off three straight wins over Julian van der Watt who admittedly spent the day getting to know his brand new CRG chassis. Delano Fowler was third on his karting comeback aboard a CRG, with Tristan de Nobrega, Andrew Rackstraw and Christopher Vrettos next up ahead of Masters duo Jacques De Bruyn and Ernst Viljoen.

Senior Max however proved a scintillating trio of races as Luke Herring ((LHR RKT Kosmic) overcame a seismic wrought with Umpie Swart (EMR CRG), Dino Stermin (RKT Kosmic), Andrew Rackstraw and Jason Coetzee to beat Swart, who won his fourth race of the day in the final, two races to one with none of the five ever much more than that many kart lengths apart as they bumped an barged their way to the finish. Sixth-placed Tristan de Nobrega had the best seat in the house as kept a watching brief.

Sebastian Boyd (Boyd Boss Freight Kosmic) used his previous weekend’s packed European grid experience to best effect as he turned the tables on Jason Coetzee (RKT Kosmic) to take Junior Max honours two races to one in another hard-fought if not quite so robust day-long battle. Worcester farm kid JP Hamman (Hammanshof Kosmic) beat Charl Visser (Charl Electrical FA Kart) by a point to sneak third for the day ahead of brother and sister Gabi and Storm Lanfear.

Tate Bishop (TPB Kosmic) worked hard for his two wins and a second to take primary school Maxterino 60cc honours over Kyle Visser (Charl Electric Zanardi) after race 1 winner Troy Dolinschek (Makita Kosmic) was eliminated in the third race to end up third for the day ahead Jason MacBeath. There was a monumental battle behind between mainly control engine SAKRA class rookies Denis Joubert, Paul Malcolm, Reza Levy (ALR), Mikhail Fernandez, Lucas Royston and Dylan Snell which eventually resolved itself in that order.

Joseph Oelz (Kosmic) was another of the few drivers to take a relatively easy three-heat victory in the other primary school Mini Max class over impressive newcomer Sibo Solomon (Kosmic). Another Kosmic duo, Tate Bishop and Kai Van Zyl swapped third and fourth places to end up in those positions overall, with the ever-improving Thaqib Meyer next up ahead of Andre Le Richeand and Liam de Beer.

Valentino Hoffman (GP Energy FA Kart) fought back from a first race spin to take two tough race wins and steal the junior primary Micro Max day from perpetual second-placed kid Joaquin De Oliviera (ESA Partner FA), race 1 winner Reza Levy (ALR CRG) third from Julius Schwager (FA), Mischa Williams, Reese Koorzen and Ethan Stier.

Reese Koorzen took baby class Cadet honours with a race 1 win and a couple of seconds after race 2 and 3 winner Joshua Smit hit carburettor trouble in the opening race. Little Luan Mostert was delighted to take a best-yet second place in race 1 to end up on the podium again in third overall ahead of Ethan Deacon, Eric Norman and rookie Yusuf Parker.

Isabelle Fowler fought back to take overall Clubmans honours with two wins over Daine Angel’s one after the Stellenbosch lass had to claw her way back following a race 1 off. Isabelle took Class A for the day from Kian van der Merwe; Jody van Rensburg beat Andrew Thomas to Class B honours, while Kyle Poulter took Class C from Lamahl Padayachi, Terry Watt and Wayne Abegglen and Angel took Class X from Marco Viegas and Harry Georgiou.

Saturday’s meeting was also an important one for the WP karters as the next Killarney race is the second round of the South African national Championship Rotax Max races at the Cape Town track Saturday 29 April and if the past weekend’s action is anything to go by, the local lads look set to once again do the WPMC Kart Club proud there.
