Vereeniging hot more ways than one

The second round Northern Regions karting action at Vereeniging’s Laserfiche Raceway on Saturday was hot in more ways than one, with blistering action on track in sweltering autumn Reef conditions.

Fifteen-year old Cameron O’Connor emerged the star of the day with five wins in six starts to claim double overall honours in both DD2 and Senior Max. The East Rand kid turned on the style to romp home a triple winner in DD2, with his only challenge coming from triple SA champion Bradley Liebenberg, who overcame a difficult day at the track to keep O’Connor right on his toes in the final.

Bloemfontein lad Justin Allison ended third in DD2 from most impressive lady driver Ivana Cetinich, Bradley Liebenberg, Bevan Williams and Masters winner Andrea Furci in sixth. Pascal Acquaah and Ronaldo Baptista completed the Masters podium.

Cameron O’Connor also won two of the three Senior Max races to take overall honours there too from Ballito lad Daniel Duminy, but not before Joshua Dias turned the tables on both of them in a thrilling final where that trio put on a spectacular driving display. Dias ended up third for the day ahead of East London lass Shannon Jackson, Oliver Gunner and Tiago Rebelo.

Scott Falconer was unbeaten in an old school 125 GP class ahead of  Richard Fuller and Miguel Dias, whose three fourth places saw him ending third overall ahead of the guys who raced around him; Clint Jones, Paulo Dias and Kurt Bakewell, while Rob Bakewell took Vets honours from Wayne Masters and Mike Venske. Kyle Lawrence also took a comfortable three-race Superkarts victory over Brandon Auby, Dylan Seely and Michael Pringle.

In Junior action, Blaine Rademeyer made no mistakes to blast from pole position to three straight race high school Junior Max wins over another brilliant karting lass, Cameron Dias who shared second places two to one to overcome Wayland Wyman for third. Jayden Els fought home in fourth from Joseph Ellerine, Kwanda Mokoena and Tiffany Napier.

In senior primary school age group classes Leyton Fourie was another driver to excel on the day  senior primary school age group classes, storming to four wins and a first and second overall senior primary school age group classes on the day. Fourie made no mistakes in Mini Max as he trotted home to three wins in a row over Daniel de Paiva, Jarrod Waberski, Aqil Alibhai Ethan Coetzee and Jagger Robertson, but had to be content with second behind Kwanda Mokoena in Mini Rok.

There Leyton bounced back to win the third heat from Mokoena to rescue second from Jarrod Waberski as Ethan Coetzee, Reece Fuller and Anthony Pretorius rounded off the top six. The third senior primary school Maxterino class saw Jordan Brooks beating Muhammad Wally two races to one to claim overall honours, with Joshua de Paiva third from Aqil Alibhai, Luviwe Sambudla and KC Ensor-Smith.

Mohammad Wally made no mistakes in Micro Max, where he delivered a trio of race wins to leave Joshua de Paiva, Mohammed Moerat and Reece Fuller to pick up the pieces with Kyle Beukes, Caleb Cotterell and Jayden Goosen next up. Wian Boshoff and Luke Hill tussled for baby Cadet honours with Boshoff taking the day with two wins to Hill’s one as Cyril Jacobs, Anthon Lombard, Tshepang Shisinwana and Rayn Asmal completed the top six.

There's no rest for the Laserfiche Raceway as the Vereeniging Kart Club hosts it’s third major meeting in three weeks at this coming Saturday 8 April’s second round SA Rok Cup races, with karters from around the country returning to race the various Rok classes as well as the MSA Academy, where the local lads will want to avenge their Cape rivals’ recent upcountry successes before the circus moves to Cape Town’s Killarney raceway for the second round national championship races at the end of the month.
