Another tough weekend for Napier

Roodepoort karting Lass Tiffany Napier refuses to buckle under the pressure of another hard karting weekend at the second round of the Northern Regions Karting Championship races at Vereeniging’s Laserfiche Raceway over the weekend. The British International Grade 10 scholar showed good pace over the weekend but she found the going tough in the grinding higher school class Junior Max mid-pack.

“I was quick on old tyres in warm up, but the grip and new tyres caught us out again and I qualified 6th, which was about the best I could do, but that also saw me in the mid pack, which is always a risky place to start a race and someone tried to dive me on the first lap and I lost touch with the pack, although I was happy that I could at least maintain that gap to the guys ahead.

“I had a great start in race 2, but Jayden Els bogged in front of me and I was boxed in, which allowed Kwanda Mokoena to dive in on me and I ended up off the track and the pack was gone by the time I was back on. “I fought back and made some great overtakes but then Zaheem Goolam closed the door on me  when I made my move on him and we were off and I was out.

“My BirelArt SA team did a fantastic job to get my brand new chassis straightened again and the damaged corner replaced in time for heat three, but I had to start at the back and picked off a few competitors before I had a good tussle with Joseph Ellerine, who was driving the widest kart in the world — I could not pass him, which is a pity because I was quicker than him.

“It’s tough out there — I’m learning very quickly against a tough pack of guys, but I am getting braver every race and I enjoyed all the overtaking this weekend. “I also have a great team around me and I am willing to learn and take the good advice from them and I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before the effort and hard work start showing results!

“Yes, a little good luck would also be very good, but I’m also really looking forward to travelling to Cape Town for the national at the end of the month — that’s a new track for me and I can’t wait to race in Cape Town.”
