Coetzee made to work at Killarney

Jason Coetzee endured a tougher day than usual at the third round of the Western Province Karting Championship races at Killarney on Saturday with his single win in the Junior Max finale seemingly scant reward compared to his domination in that class of late. But the Durbanville Grade 10 scholar was not at all fazed.

“Sebastian Boyd beat me fair and square in the first two races,” Jason admitted. “He put it on pole and beat JP Hamman and in a straight race in race 1 and in race 2 I slipped too far back in the pack on the first lap and took too long to make my way back to second and then catch him; so there was not enough time to find a way past at the end. “I won the final and that was a good dice, but I can’t take Seb or any of the others for granted — Junior Max is so competitive.

“I had an even tougher weekend in Senior Max though — it may be a small field but there are five or six karts that can win there and those races were like a war! “I was well up on a few occasions, but they take no prisoners there and I found myself on the wrong side of a few altercations. “I am learning so much from the older guys though and I really enjoyed all three of those races.”

Jason has a busy few weeks coming up - he heads to Vereeniging this coming week to defend his MSA Academy class championship lead before coming home to prepare for the second round of an explosive national championship weekend once again in both Junior and Senior Max on April, 29.
