Paulshof, Sandton lightie Kwanda Mokoena set Vereeniging’s Laserfiche Raceway on fire on Saturday when he dominated the SA Mini Rok Cup in spite of four major battles en route to winning the war. Mokoena was first across the line in all four races to take overall honours in the primary school class for for the day, even though a third race nose cone penalty — mandatory if a kart’s nose is dislodged after contact — lost him that win.

Kwanda also raced in the high school age MSA Academy class, where he overcame a shocking two races in the middle of the day to deliver a strong comeback in the final. “Saturday was a very tough day for very different reasons in both Mini Rok and MSA Academy,” Kwanda admitted.

“I qualified on pole in Mini Rok but those races were as tough as ever — I was able to win all four, but I had a nose cone penalty in race 3 and it was no walk in the park. “I had to fight off a very good field of drivers -- especially Kyle Visser, Daniele Patrizi, Leyton Fourie and Niklas Roos - they pushed me to my limits lap after lap, but what a joy it was to be involved in such close nail biting action.

“I qualified 5th for the Academy races and finished third in the first race after another great fight with my friends but unfortunately I retired from the next two heats. “That was really tough, but that’s how it goes sometimes and I was happy to fight back to grab a few points in the final.
