Team boss Lee racing for rivals

Race team boss and Former Polo Cup racer Lee Thompson gets back behind the wheel again at Kyalami over the weekend where he will race for the rival Pepper Racing outfit as he substitutes for championship leader Shaun La Réserveé who misses the race for his wedding Saturday 22 April. Lee will at the same time run his regular charges Charl Smallberger and Simon Need.

“I am really excited to race in the closeness of Polo Cup again,” Lee confessed. “I last did one of these in 2011, but these kids are so quick these days, so let’s see if I can keep up.”

“Looking at my team, Charl had some bad luck at Killarney and did an amazing job to come back like that in the races considering his little running time on Friday — it’s very close between the lot in GTC2 and I’m sure he can come out on top. “Saturday will also be Simon’s second outing at Kyalami and judging from the improvements at Killarney we are going in the right direction.”

“Considering I missed most of practice and qualifying, we still did pretty well to finish third overall at Killarney last time out,” Charl Smallberger, who races an iCorp LTR Volkswagen Golf GTI 7 in the Sasol GTC2 series admitted. “So after a tough start to 2017,  we have to bounce back and I'm looking forward to Kyalami - it's a circuit that I really enjoy. "The car has a lot of potential and barring any mechanical dramas we can definitely challenge for a win. "We are also launching a new livery which will make the car stand out among my competitors."

“During my rookie season last year, I was privileged enough to race at the new Kyalami,” Mauritian Photonics LTR Polo Cup pilot Simon Need explains.  “It’s an absolutely stunning challenge to lap quickly there and I’m thoroughly looking forward to competing there again. “Lee Thompson racing always delivers a great car, so its down to me to extract the best from it - I can’t wait to race!”
