Toughest weekend yet for Mokoena
While most would crawl up and hide away after a weekend like that, karting kid Kwanda Mokoena is rather reflecting on the positives following a dreadful day at the second round of the SA National Karting Championship at Cape Town’s Killarney Kart track.
“That was my worst karting national ever!” Kwanda grimaced. “But we lose; we learn and we build character despite our setbacks.” 13-year old Mokoena was not quite satisfied with qualifying 11th for the high school Junior Max races, but that’s a result he would gladly have taken later in the weekend after he was taken out of the first race and struggled home at the back.
“The same thing happened in the second race, but the race was stopped and the second half went well — I fought back from the back to 11th, only to drop to the back again after the two halves of the race were added up. “Then I was running in the top ten in the final when I was taken out mid-race and had dropped back again, so it really is a weekend to forget, but I would rather think of it as good, hard experience.
“Tigers don’t cry — a sportsman never loses — he rather builds character and I can’t wait for the next race. “Thank you to my faithful mechanic Miles Thabang Lams for standing by me through a really tough one; Elijah Gumbi, Squadra Corse, Etienne Roos and the RKT team, Vaughn Williams and my family — I will be back!”
