But Gio needs luck at historic East London

Franschhoek lightie Giordano Lupini can’t wait for his first visit to the East London Grand Prix Circuit over the weekend of 20 May. Not only is the Pepper Racing Engen Volkswagen Cup rookie relishing racing on the classic circuit, but he’s also looking forward to finally re-living some of the legends he’s heard about pretty much since he can remember.

“I’m super excited to tackle this great track,” 16-year old Giordano confirmed. “I’ve never been there before, so I’ll have to learn the track and I’ll be trying to get closer to the pace since the last round.” Giordano, who has shown great pace in his first two Polo outings, has not had the easiest of runs with four disastrous races in spite of regularly qualifying inside the Polo Cup top ten. “I am also really hoping for better luck this time around.”

Fourth generation racer Giordano is also looking forward to seeing the source of so many stories his dad and grandfather have told him over the years. “They have told me some of these tales a hundred times,” Giordano grinned. “Like when my great grandfather Gigi kept the Union Castle liner back to load his Ferrari to take to Cape Town after it finished the 1960 Grand Prix.

“Another one was when Gigi so badly welcomed Count de Beaufort to his braai in his broken Italian-English while entertaining the likes of Jim Clark, Stirling Moss and Graham Hill at the GP caravan park before my dad was even born! “Any way I’m looking forward to see the lay of the land in East London, but more than anything I am really holding thumbs for a clean weekend on track — bring it on!”
