Mokoena makes Mini Rok National his own

The fourth round of the Western Cape Karting Championship featuring the second round of the SA National Mini Rok primary school championship delivered some exceptional racing on Saturday; hot enough for the mercury to run high on and off track. There was one lad who earned the headlines however — Paulshof, Johannesburg kid Kwanda Mokoena, who quite literally made the Mini Rok National his own.

Mokoena put his FA Kart on pole position before fighting off the undivided attentions of his pursuers to deliver a trio of race wins and propel himself into that national championship lead. Mokoena’s championship charge was made easier by local lad Troy Dolinschek (Makita Kosmic) and Gauteng Kosmic duo Aqil Alibhai and Leyton Fourie sharing out the second places to allow Kwanda to win the day by 14 points overall with local duo, Dolinschek and Tate Bishop (Kosmic) second and third for the day.

Alibhai and Fourie were next up, with second to fifth places covered by just four points, while local lightie Julius Schwager was a splendid sixth from Jozi visitor Jarred Waberski and Daniele Patrizi and two more locals, Kyle Visser and Kai Van Zijl. That left Mokoena leading Fourie by five points in the SA Mini Rok championship, with Alibhai, Waberski, Bishop and Patrizi in a tight tussle for third.

There was a little controversy in the local Cape Junior Max category when championship leader and race 2 winner Jason Coetzee (RKT Kosmic) and pole man and race 2 winner Sebastian Boyd (Boyd Boss Freight Kosmic) tangled on track and the discussions spilled over to the weigh-bridge. That also allowed a delighted SA International CIK-FIA Karter Charl Visser (FA Kart) through to take his maiden win in the class.

Coetzee took the day overall to defend his narrow title advantage over Boyd, who ended third overall behind Visser, but ahead of Simon Simpson-Heath, Nicholas Sage and Gabi Lanfear. Coetzee leads the title chase by 15 points over Boyd with Visser holding a watching brief in third.

Jurie Swart (EMR CRG) took advantage of Julian van der Watt’s absence to win the Formula 1600 races at East London to storm to a dominant DD2 victory over Jonathan Thomas, Andrew Rackstraw (CRG) and Masters winner, the returning Jacques De Bruyn (Kosmic). Marco Viegas, Ernst Viljoen and Clubmans graduate Andrew Thomas rounded off the top six. Van der Watt  still leads the title race by 9 points to Swart with Thomas and Rackstraw next up.

Luke Herring (RKT Kosmic) continued his Senior Max domination over the similarly mounted Jason Coetzee, while Dino Stermin (Kosmic) and Umpie Swart shared the second places, although Swart’s issues allowed Andrew Rackstraw, Dario Busi and Reece Oellermann to complete the top six. Herring leads the championship by a comfortable 35 points at the midpoint of the season, with Coetzee, Swart, Stermin and Rackstraw squabbling over second.

In other primary school action, Troy Dolinschek (Makita Kosmic) was unbeaten but his battles with top four rivals entertained throughout as Tate Bishop (TB Kosmic), Kyle Visser (Chalrl Electric Zanardi) and Denis Joubert (SAKRA Kosmic) shared the podiums between them. Jason MacBeath, Dylan Snell and Mikhail Fernandez rounded off the top six. Bishop and Dolinschek are now tied in the championship lead with Visser third.

Joseph Oelz (FA Kart) was unbeaten in under-14 Mini Max, although Kai Van Zyl (SAKRA Kosmic), Tate Bishop (TB Kosmic) and Sibo Solomon (Kosmic) made him work for his wins as they shared the balance of the wins out between them. Andre Le Riche ended fifth from Thaqib Meyer. Oelz leads the WP title chase by 25 points from van Zijl and Bishop, who are split by just two points after 4 rounds.

Things were a little less clear cut in the under-11 Micro Max where Joaquin De Oliveira (ESN Partner FA), Valentino Hoffman (GP EnergyFA) and Julius Schwager (FA) shared the race wins. De Oliveira won the day from Hoffman in the end with Luca Wehrli an impressive third from Schwager as Ethan Stier and Mischa Williams closed off the top six.

Joshua Smit, Ethan Deacon and Reese Koorzen likewise shared out the three baby Cadet class heat wins to finish the day in that order as Smit took the win on a count-back. Eric Norman was fourth from Yusuf Parker and a troubled Luan Mostert.

Isabelle Fowler took a close two race to one Clubmans win over Jody Van Rensburg, while the consistent Andrew Thomas took class B after winners Kyle Poulter and Grant Mostert also hit trouble and Lamahl Padayachee took Class C honours.

The Cape’s karters now take a break until the next WP regional 22 July, but there is the small matter of the third round of the SA National Karting Championships for most of the region’s top karting kids to deal with at iDube in KwaZulu Natal, two weeks before that.
