Van Zijl a strong second at Killarney

Cape Town karter Kai van Zijl was more than happy to set new Killarney Mini Max lap record en route to second overall at the fourth round of the Cape championship especially considering he was carrying a slight neck injury from a previous race.

“I was happy with my Mini Max weekend and I’m proud of my lap record,” Kai admitted. “I was a little uncomfortable in the kart but it went well - I was second in the first race but I was held up by a slower guy who had a better start than me in race 2 and it was too late to catch the guys up front who had broken away while I tried to find a way past. I made no mistakes in race 3 and took another second to take second overall.

Kai also raced in the Mini Rok national races at Killarney on Saturday, but a warm-up lap incident bent his kart and spoiled his weekend. “That was a tough break — we had the pace until then, but I’m happy with my Mini Max result and we are still in with a championship shout there.”
