Simpson set for streets of Detroit

South African IMSA Prototype racing star Stephen Simpson is relishing racing on one of his favorite circuits as the US WeatherTech Sportscar Series heads to the streets of Belle Isle Park, Detroit for the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic Saturday 3 June. Simpson and Russo-Canadian co-driver Misha Goikhberg sit joint third in the championship chase after four rounds in the JDC-Miller Motorsports Oreca-Gibson — the best of the non-Cadillac runners.

“Detroit is a track I really enjoy racing,” Stephen admitted. “It’s a tight street course, narrower in some corners than other street tracks and there is a mixture of concrete and asphalt, which makes it even more interesting and quite challenging to set up the car and to adapt to the changing surface over a lap in qualifying and then over the race distance too.

“Misha and I finished 2nd in the PC class at Belle Isle a few years ago and we are determined to get back on the podium this year. “As always, the JDC-Miller Motorsports Team has been doing a great job and we are looking forward to another strong weekend — somebody has to beat those Cadillacs sometime and we hope we can do that soon!”

The 1 hour 40 minute Sports Car Classic is more of a sprint than an endurance race and can be followed live via streaming at www.imsa.tv. Racing starts 12h40 local time (18h40 SA time) Saturday 3 June.
