Husqvarna’s Malan on road to recovery

Husqvarna South Africa motocross star Maddy Malan intends to bounce back stronger than ever once recovered after sustaining a significant shoulder injury at the recent Dirt Broncos national in Krugersdorp. Malan has since undergone surgery to his right shoulder to repair rotator cuff and ligament damage, but he is now well on his way to recovery.

“It was a big crash and I was in quite a lot of pain,” Maddy explained. “But the track medics and the doctors at the hospital were fantastic and I was in the very best hands for my operation, so now it’s just a matter of sitting it out until I am fully recovered and ready to ride again. “I’ll keep working on my fitness where I can, but I plan to come back stronger than ever.”

Malan will play a Husqvarna team ambassador role at all races and functions while he recovers. “My teammate Richie van der Westhuizen did a fantastic job at Broncos, so now it’s a matter of supporting him and the team as he chases both championships now.”

The Husqvarna motocross team will now regroup around van der Westhuizen, who will continue in both MX1 and MX2 championships for the rest of the year. “I am sure everybody feels the same as me and wishes Maddy all the very best on his road to recovery,” Husqvarna SA brand manager Fred Fensham confirmed. “We know he will bounce back stronger and more determined than ever before – you are in all of our prayers Maddy!

“Richie and Maddy have been absolutely fantastic this season and both have given us so much to cheer about as they have put Husqvarna on the podium more times than we could ever have wished for. “Richie sits in fourth in the MX 1 chase, 20 points behind championship leader Purdon, and in effective 2nd position in MX 2, 13 points behind Goosen and in my view and based on his performance of winning MX1 last time out, it’s game on for the team and Richie.

“Richie will now move on to our leading MX 2 bike and he will work closely with Morne Visser, Willie Schoeman and the team and we have drafted Calep Tenant into the Husqvarna team to run in MX 2 alongside Richie. “Calep has shown awesome pace on a 2016 FC 450 and we think he will equip himself very well on a more competitive machine. He will also be able to assist Richie in his race for the championship from the next round of the Nationals on 22 July.”
