Father, son; Shaun, Dan in Zwartkops wars

Shaun and Daniel Duminy were looking forward to both racing on the same raceday at Zwartkops’ Youth Day Friday races, from which the Ballito father and son however left frustrated following a rough day at the races. Dad Shaun returned to the wheel of his Sasol GTC2 SMD Ford Focus for the first time in 2017, but his comeback was short lived…

“We had a good first few laps after some issues in a tricky qualifying and I was enjoying a good dice,” Shaun explained. “But Iain Stevenson’s VW Golf hit me on my right rear going into turn 6, almost turning me right around however I managed to catch and bring it back but we collided again. “We’d reached the apex of turn 7 by then and I T-boned him. “That was the end of my race thanks to extensive damage to my car, as well as all round.”

Son Daniel also endured a torrid day with his SMD Pepper Racing Polo in the Engen Volkswagen Cup at Zwartkops when he was taken out of a points paying position when he became embroiled in a Turn 1 accident that happened around him late in the first race.

“Yet another bad day,” Daniel admitted. “It breaks me that I can’t deliver for my Pepper Racing team as I know they put in so much hard work. “There was also an issue with my car from first practice, which we could not quite get to the bottom of, but huge thanks to everyone for the support and thanks to the team for everything.”

Daniel however bounced back to score points in the second race in spite of his issues. “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” Dan concluded. “We will get there soon!”
