Vereeniging podium Napier's just reward

Lady luck has finally smiled on Roodepoort karting lass Tiffany Napier, who ended her first trouble-free race of the season squarely on the podium at Saturday’s fifth round Gauteng Regional Karting Championships Vereeniging’s Laserfiche Raceway. Napier was at the sharp end of the time sheets throughout Friday’s practice before qualifying fourth and then delivering three strong races to end up third for the day.

“Third for the day — I don’t remember being so happy for a long, long time!” Tiffany beamed. “I’ve worked so hard on all fronts, from seat time to racecraft and fitness training and now that’s all starting to pay off. “I also struggled initially with my BirelArt chassis, but thanks to Neil Basilio and Corrie Liebenberg’s efforts, we now have it right, while Mark Williams has done an excellent job on our engines.

The whole weekend was great — I was quick Friday and qualifying went OK. “Then in race 1 I was running a strong third place in race 1, but I eventually finished sixth — a last lap move didn’t quite work out in my favour, but hey — nothing ventured nothing gained!

“Starting sixth in heat 2 took some pressure off and then one of the guys jump started ahead and that caused all sorts of chaos in the first 3 corners and I took full advantage of it. “From there I ran second until my lady karting rival Cameron Dias closed the gap and made a pass with a lap to spare. “I was having none of that and passed Cam back to finish second — that was fantastic! I started the final in second on the grid and had a great tussle for second with Jayden Els, Cameron and Wayland Wyman and I eventually finished fourth.

“We ended up third overall for the day which is an excellent result because I’m now back on course in my regional championship after some disastrous results so far this year. “This result also positions me well for a really good result at the African Open at Zwartkops in two weeks time — I can’t wait for that full weekend of racing including the next regional on Saturday and the Open on Sunday, with a chance to win a ticket to the Rotax Junior Max World Final!”
