Mokoena’s first Junior Max win

Kwanda Mokoena went to Vereeniging’s Laserfiche Raceway to have a little fun at the fifth round Northern Regions Races, a week after winning the South African Mini Rok championship there a week ago, but the Rivonia Primary Grade 7 kid came home with even more silverware following an exceptional run in Junior Max.

“We decided to enter, and go have some fun after wining the SA Mini Rok championship last weekend,” Kwanda explained. “So I was quite surprised to end up second on the Junior Max grid, so the weekend suddenly got a bit more serious. “It went even better in the races - I won all three heats and took the overall class or the day!

“I just put my head down and disappeared in the first two races, but the last one was close - champion versus champion dice,  which I enjoyed with my old pal Jayden Els. “We also raced in Mini Rok — we never had any engines prepped, but we did it for fun anyway and I had a few great races.

“We have the next round at Zwartkops in two weeks, the day before the African Open there on the Sunday,” Kwanda concluded. “Who knows, the way it went today, maybe we can claim that ticket to the Junior Max World Finals - that would be a great bonus to what’s been a great karting year!”
