Killarney delivers its usual kart thrills

A fresh, wet start that cleared into a decent if overcast day’s racing, a smattering of out of town competition and a fair mix of dominant performances and close-fought classes set Killarney’s sixth-round WP Karting Championship meeting apart on Saturday.

Jurie Swart was one of the men to dominate the Rotax DD2 roost aboard his EMR CRG, trotting off to a trio of race wins over Jonathan Thomas (Partners Hair CRG) and Andrew Rackstraw (CRG) each time in the absence of Julian van der Watt who was away racing on the Zwartkops main circuit. Masters winner Jacques De Bruyn was fourth from oldtimer rivals Gary Lennon and Roy Gruer.

Herring dominates
Luke Herring (LHR Kosmic) likewise dominated Senior Max 125cc proceedings with three straight race wins over Jason Coetzee (RKT Kosmic) and Andrew Rackstraw (Tony Kart). Dario Busi returned in fourth ahead of Reece Oellermann and Ziyaad Ibrahim.
Kohen Bam (FA Kart) took two DVS race wins to one over Dino Stermin (Designer Trims Kosmic), but only after Stermin lost a second heat win to a nosecone penalty, to take overall honours in the new quickest Cape Karting class. Out of town visitor Arnold Neveling from Vereeniging was third from local lad Sebastian Boyd, Jozi visitor Jordan North and another local, Jason Coetzee.

Charl Visser had an exceptional day in the high school classes, taking a close 125cc Junior Max overall win aboard his Charl Electric FA Kart over Sebastian Boyd (Boyd Boss Freight Kosmic) and Jason Coetzee (RKT Kosmic). Each of those three took a race win and they were separated by just two points overall in the end, with Simon Simpson-Heath fourth ahead of Nicholas Sage and the best of the Lanfears, Gabi - ahead of sister, Jade and brother, Storm.

Visser was unstoppable in the first ever OKJ Academy race in the Cape — the South African representative in the international CIK-FIA Academy series put his overseas experience to best effect to drive his Charl Electric FA Kart home to a trio of wins over PE visitor Joshua Coertze, Johannesburg lad Joseph Ellerine and locals Storm Lanfear and Sibo Solomon.

Primary school thrills
The Cape’s primary school classes provided their usual thrills, but Tate Bishop made no mistakes to take all three under-12 Maxterino 60cc wins over Troy Dolinschek (Makita Kosmic) and Jason MacBeath (Kosmic). Kyle Visser was third from two third-generation kid drivers from famous Cape racing families; Denis Joubert and Reza Levy.

Joseph Oelz (Kosmic) beat Kai Van Zyl (SKRA Kosmic) two races to one to take a narrow under-13 Mini Max 125cc overall win for the day from Tate Bishop (TB Kosmic). Sibo Solomon was third from Luca Wehrli and Thaqib Meyer.

Reza Levy (ALR CRG) took two under-11 Micro Max 125cc race wins to one over Reese Koorzen (FA Kart) to win the day. Joaquin De Oliveira (EA Partners FA Kart) was third from Valentino Hoffman, Ethan Stier and Mischa Williams.

Joshua Smit won the second and third baby under-8 Cadet 50cc wins to overcome race 1 winner Reese Koorzen by a single point for overall honours. Ethan Deacon was third in Saturday’s Cape’s kindergarden karting class action from Luan Mostert, Eric Norman and Yusuf Parker.

Clubmans capers
Last but not least, Andrew Thomas drove his Blake Brothers machine to Cape Clubmans victory with a two race to one performance over arch rival Jody Van Rensburg (Star Security). Graham Stephen beat the returning Christopher Vrettos to the Class B win, while Harry Georgiou took Class C honours over Terry Watt, Grant Mostert and Charles Matthewson and after race 1 winner Mario Ras hit trouble in the other races.

It’s a busy month ahead for many of the Cape’s karters as they travel to the Zwartkops double-header this weekend 19-20 August with a Northern Regions regional Saturday before the chance to win a trip to November’s Rotax Max World Finals at Sunday’s African Open. They will all be back in action for the penultimate WP round 7 at Killarney Saturday 2 September.
