Cetinich, Dias show Gauteng boys the way

Zwartkops Kart Raceway’s penultimate Northern Regions Kart Championship round delivered a few interesting surprises, most of which served to set up cliffhangers in the various classes’ title races heading into the November finale, while two young ladies showed the gentlemen the way and the Dias family came away smiling after a fine day’s racing.

Ivana Cetinich was one of the lasses to teach the lads a lesson as she romped to a trio of wins in the DD2 gearbox class to move into second in the championship behind leader Brad Liebenberg, who suffered a torrid day at the races. That left Brandon Smith to fight Nicholas Spanoyannis off for third as Smith jumped to third in the Championship race with Jamie Smith fourth on the day from Anton Pommersheim. DD2 Masters winner Philippe Chapat meanwhile drew level with championship rival Pasqual Aquaahin in the title race to set up a thriller come the finals.

Cameron Dias was another famous young Gauteng karting girl to show the boys the way as she won a Junior Max race and took two second places to take the day and close down on championship leader and the lad who won the other two races, Jayden Els. That has set up another championship showdown between the two of them in a few weeks time. Daniele Patrizi, Kwanda Mokoena, Joseph Ellerineand yet another quick lady, Tiffany Napier meanwhile enjoyed a titanic spat to resolve the top six in that order on the day.

Big brother Joshua made it two wins on the day for the Dias family by driving to Senior Max honours in all three heats to move into the championship lead with one meeting left to run. Oliver Gunner and Daniel Duminy are however close behind in the title chase after Gunner drew level with Duminy by narrowly beating the Durban driver to second. Ian Allnut, Damian Hammond and Carlo Olivier closed off the Senior top six.

Scott Falconer put one hand on the old school Northern Regions 125GP Championship after taking a couple of wins to win the day, but the Dias family chalice literally flowed over when Paulo drove to the race 3 win to take second for the day from yet another karting Dias, Miguel. Kurt ended up third from Clint Jones and Ryan Bakewell, while the older Bakewell, Rob took Vets honours from Wayne Masters, Laurance Jones and Mauro Munari. Michael Pringle dominated Superkart races from Dylan Seely.

There was action aplenty in the primary school classes where 2017 SA Mini Rok champion Kwanda Mokoena came out on top of a brilliant three-winner Mini Rok raceday over SA Maxterino champion Leyton Fourie and NR championship leader Jarrod Waberski with that trio heading to the Gauteng finale covered by just thirteen championship points. Ethan Coetzee ended fourth from Nick Roos and Reece Fuller.

Jarrod Waberski however made no mistakes to take a trio of Mini Max wins to close up on troubled championship leader Leyton Fourie, who could only manage fourth on the day behind Daniel De Paiva and Aqil Alibhai. That all served to close up the championship chase between the four of them as Josh Le Roux and Matthew Morrell ended fifth and sixth.

Maxterino championship leader Jordan Brooks scored a couple of wins to take the day over race 3 winner Joshua De Paiva and Muhammad Wally and close up on championship leader Aqil Alibhai, who ended up a hard-fought fourth on the day from Troy Snyman and KC Ensor-Smith. That’s another Northern Regions karting championship set to go right down to the wire.

The NR Micro Max title is however all but said and done as SA champion Muhammad Wally romped to another three race wins to take a very handy lead into the finale. Troy Snyman was second three times and Joshua De Paiva delivered a trio of thirds to shut off the podium, but there was a closer fight for fourth as Mandla Mlangeni, KC Ensor-Smith and Moosa Kajee swapped places throughout to close off the top six.

Last but not least, Wian Boshoff took a couple of race wins and a third to snatch the overall baby Cadet win for the day over Tshepang Shisinwana, Rayn Asmal, Aadam Kajee, Cyril Jacobs and Luke Hill, who had a tough day at the track. Boshoff thereby slipped into a tiny championship lead over Hill to set up yet another ultra-close title fight at the Northern Regions Karting Finals at Vereeniging’s Laserfiche Raceway in a few weeks time…
