Mokoena takes Mini Race of Champions

Sandton’s South African primary school Mini Rok karting champion Kwanda Mokoena returned home to put in a fine effort as he won the penultimate Northern Regions Mini Rok round at the Zwartkops Kart Raceway to keep himself in line for the Gauteng class championship too. Mokoena who had just returned from the Rok International Finals in Italy, in essence won a race of champions as he defeated SA Maxterino champion Leyton Fourie and NR Mini Max championship leader Jarrod Waberski in Saturday’s races.

“Just a week after coming back from Italy driving my Mini Rok back at home for the first time felt a bit difficult as the Italian set up and rubber on the track is so different from my local set up,” East London born Kwanda explained. “So we battled in qualifying but I still pulled it off in the heats and managed to come back strong to win the day against a very strong field, so I am pretty chuffed - we are still in with a chance for the NR title — can’t wait for the final!

“We also raced Junior Max and I was very fast, but it is so tough in the bigger class and I got shoved and pushed here and there and only managed a 5th overall — not the worst result but we need to qualify in front and get out front if we want to win! “Thanks to everyone for another very good day at the races.”
