Laserfiche epic as titles come to head

Vereeniging’s Laserfiche Raceway sets the scene for the final round of the Northern Regions Kart Championship with several championship cliffhangers set to go down in the various classes Saturday 18 November finale and Gauteng’s karting ladies keen to once again show the gentlemen the way. Lady drivers don’t have it easy, but karting is one sport where the girls can compete with the boys on an even playing field — well, as easy as some of the lads will allow it to be — and last time out two of the fairer sex once again famously showed the way.

Ivana Cetinich taught the DD2 gearbox boys a karting lesson as she romped to a dominant trio of wins to keep her championship aspirations alive behind Bradley Liebenberg, who will return for Rotax Max World Final Duty last weekend intent to add a Northern Regions title to his SA championship. Keep an eye out for another fast lady and former NR Senior champion Fabienne Lanz, Brandon and Jamie Smith, Nicholas Spanoyannis and Anton Pommersheim among that lot, while the DD2 Masters chase could not be tighter with protagonists Philippe Chapat and Pasqual Aquaah heading to Vereeniging on equal points.

Cameron Dias is another famous Gauteng karting girl who showed the boys the way last time out and she heads to V-Town to try wrest the Junior Max title from leader, world Mini Max champion Jayden Els. Dias is not the only lady with Junior Max winning form — if Tiffany Napier can escape the mid-pack shenanigans hell-bent on stopping her, she may well be the next winning lady among a tight Junior championship fight including the likes of Daniele Patrizi, Kwanda Mokoena and Joseph Ellerine.

If Cameron is in the Junior fight, then big brother Joshua Dias is the man to beat in Senior Max, but not if Oliver Gunner and Daniel Duminy, Ian Allnut, Damian Hammond or Carlo Olivier have anything to do about it. Gunner and Duminy, who two points apart in second and third in the championship, are close enough behind Dias in the chase to be a real threat, so this one promises to be a cracker.

Scott Falconer has one hand on the old school Northern Regions 125 GP Championship, but the dice there, is for second between two more of the Dias karting dynasty, Paulo and Miguel, Kurt Bakewell and Clint Jones, while Rob Bakewell will fight for the Vets title with Wayne Masters, Laurance Jones and Mauro Munari, and the likes of Michael Pringle and Dylan Seely tussle for Superkart glory.

The primary school classes will see a Mini Rok battle of the champions with 2017 SA Mini Rok champion Kwanda Mokoena fighting it out with 2017 SA Mini Max champion Leyton Fourie, freshly back from the Max World Finals, championship leader Jarrod Waberski and the likes of Ethan Coetzee, Nick Roos and Reece Fuller all there and ready to pick up the pieces.

Championship leader Leyton Fourie has wrapped up the Northern Regions title as well as the Mini Max national crown, but Jarrod Waberski is on a charge there and both Daniel De Paiva and Aqil Alibhai right in the title mix too. Never discount the likes of Josh Le Roux and Matthew Morrell among that lot either.

Maxterino championship leader Jordan Brooks scored a couple of wins last time out but Aqil Alibhai, Joshua De Paiva and Muhammad Wally are all still in with a shot at that Gauteng karting crown and the likes of Troy Snyman and KC Ensor-Smith are also right in the frame of yet another Northern Regions karting championship set to go right down to the wire.

The NR Micro Max title is however all but said and done as SA champion Muhammad Wally heads to the finale in full control of the championship. Still, Troy Snyman and Joshua De Paiva will give it their all to end their 2017 Gauteng championship challenges in style and the likes of Mandla Mlangeni, KC Ensor-Smith and Moosa Kajee are all capable of upsetting the form book.

They may all be under eight years old, but the Cadet kids certainly know how to race and the babies of Northern Regions karting head to Vereeniging embroiled in a tight title tussle with Wian Boshoff just a handful of points clear of Luke Hill and Tshepang Shisinwana, Rayn Asmal, Aadam Kajee and Cyril Jacobs all in with a shout.

Find the Laserfische Raceway on van Riebeeck Street, Vereeniging next to the Vaal Show Grounds, left off the Boy Louw Street off-ramp heading south on the R59 Vereeniging freeway. Scrumptious refreshments are on sale at the circuit and entrance is free, so why not make a day of it? You’d need to go a long way to find better entertainment than what’s set to fly in Vereeniging on Saturday…
