Champ Mokoena bids a sad farewell

Paulshof’s South African Mini Rok karting champion Kwanda Mokoena bids farewell to the primary school classes where he has performed so well over the past few years, when he lines up for his swansong Mini Rok race at Vereeniging’s Laserfiche Raceway for the final round of the 2017 Northern Regions Mini Rok championship. It’s a big weekend for Mokoena, who can wrest the Gauteng title out of a fraught three way battle to add to his 2017 SA championship.

“It’s going to be a sad day to bid farewell to Mini Rok,” Kwanda confessed. “I have loved racing in this class and I will leave as SA champion after finishing runner up last year, as well as runner up in the 2016 Maxterino championship, along with my underdog double 2015 Northern Regions Mini Rok and Maxterino championships.

“I am in a very close fight for the Northern Regions Mini Rok championship this weekend — Jarrod Waberski leads the title by a very small margin, SA Mini Max champ Leyton Fourie is second and I am close by in third, so it’s going to be a Mini Rok race of champions on Saturday! “It’s been a roller coaster season though and I am going to go out to have fun  on Saturday — just like Lewis Hamilton did this past week in Brazil after he had already sealed the Championship!

Kwanda will also race in high school OKJ MSA Academy class on Saturday, where he continues to prepare for his final step up next season. “We have been preparing for the Junior classes over the past two seasons as we have to race there next season, but we won in the other high school Junior Max class the last time out at Laserfiche, so Saturday should be fun — I just can’t wait to race!”
